Jim is a local guy, starting out his career with several positions in the transportation industry in Erie and attending college in both Jamestown, New York and at Gannon in Erie, PA. A brief bio is included below.
Florida East Coast Railway has recently purchased GE locomotives and is working with GE to hybridize the locomotives so they will be able to operate on LNG, liquefied natural gas. Mr. Hertwig will be sure to deliver a very interesting and informative talk about the railroad and their efforts to make these very substantial and timely changes.

James R. Hertwig brings 45 years of freight transportation experience to his position as President and CEO of Florida East Coast Railway (FECR). Prior to joining FECR in 2010, Jim served as President of CSX Intermodal, Inc., President of Landstar Logistics, President and CEO of Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation, Chairman and CEO of Red Arrow Freight Lines and President and CEO of Con-Way Intermodal.
Jim began his career in the transportation industry in 1971 as a dock foreman with Associated Transport in Erie, Pennsylvania. Jim also spent 13 years holding key management positions at CF Motor Freight, a nationwide LTL carrier. This included two years in Erie as terminal Manager. Jim attended both Jamestown Community College and Gannon (College) University.
Jim presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Transportation Institute at the University of Denver. He recently concluded a third term on the Board of Directors for Intermodal Association of North America and his panel participation on a Technical Peer Review of the U.S. Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) study of the Panama Canal Expansion. In 2012, Jim was the first person outside the maritime industry to receive the Golden Compass Award from Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades.
Jim and his wife, Debbie, reside in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
